Inherent Self-Governance

As’in’î’wa’chî Ni’yawak do not subscribe to the reserve system nor the chief and council structure imposed by settlers. We are represented by the Hereditary Chief — Kwarakwante — along with the Clan Mother, the As’in’î’wa’chî Tribal Government (Elders), and ten family representatives.

Family Representation System

The Kanien'kehá:ka (Haudenosaunee or Mohawk people) organized family leaders in a clan-like system. Our ancestors, pictured here, followed this tradition and territory was held equally within the family.

Kelly Lake Cree Nation Leadership

Kelly Lake Cree Nation is an independent, sovereign Nation with established governance, structure and traditional laws. We are governed by a traditional representation system with family Headmen/women and a Hereditary Chief who is designated through family lineage, affirmed by the elders and ratified by the people.

The strategic direction of the Nation is guided by a Leadership Accord, the most recent of which was signed by the Chief, family Headmen/women and the elders in April 2010
